Walk by the Spirit?

Last week we looked at Life in the Spirit. When Jesus explained to the disciples that he was leaving them, he told them that it was better for them that he return home rather than stay on earth. (John 16:7). But that He was leaving someone behind to walk with us.
Throughout the new Testament there is a consistent reference to our Christian life being describes as walking in the Spirit. But what does this mean and what are the alternatives? What does the idea of a ‘walk’ suggest?
For some that is what you do when your car doesn’t work, while for others it’s a 1000km leisurely hike down the Bibbulmun track. The new Testament writers probably didn’t have either of those ideas in mind when they used the term, so how does walking characterise the Christian life?
