The best of times, the worst of times…

When Charles Dickens wrote these words, he was making a comparison between two cities in an age of radical opposites. ‘It was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair …, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way …”.

This does not seem far removed from our own time. While we don’t think of geographical cities we Christians are nevertheless citizens of a kingdom that is radically different from that occupied by those who don’t share our faith. It may well be described as an age of wisdom, and an age of foolishness, the epoch of belief, and the epoch of incredulity. We believe in certainty and absolutes but others live in uncertainty and relativism.

What then is the hope for the church in these times, and how then should we live?

Come on Sunday to explore further.
