It’s a challenging world we are now living in with the COVID 19 virus keeping us all at home and restricting movement throughout the state. It’s even tougher now that we have Easter school holidays. Parents are struggling to keep children entertained. Grandparents are not able to travel to spend time with their grandchildren and cinemas and other venues that help with the boredom are closed due to social distancing.

It might now be time to reach into the cupboard, dust off your favourite board games, and get the family together for a game’s afternoon. There are the old favourites, Monopoly, Uno, and the like or you can try some of the new generation games that I use at school. Sleeping Queens, walk the plank, KingDomino, or sushi go. These are just a few of the new generation games available for students that are on the market right now. Have a look below and see what you think.

My Top 6 Games for the Holidays.

Available from Brain Spice Bunbury store or their online store, most are below $40, and some are below $30

Sleeping Queens

Rise and Shine! The Pancake Queen, the Ladybug Queen and ten of their closest friends have fallen under a sleeping spell and it’s your job to wake them up. Use strategy, quick thinking and a little luck to rouse these napping nobles from their royal slumbers. Play a knight to steal a queen or take a chance on a juggling jester. But watch out for wicked potions and dastardly dragons! The player who wakes the most queens wins.

Walk the Plank

In Walk the Plank! players represent the worst pirates in a captain’s crew. The captain has rounded you all up because you’re all lazy and simply not worth the rum and loot you get paid. That said, the captain has decided he’s willing to keep two of you in his crew. To prove you’re worthy, you will fight amongst yourselves, trying to shove other players’ pirates off the end of the plank while keeping yours alive!

KingDonino

Dominoes with a kingdom building twist!

Each turn, connect a new domino to your existing kingdom, making sure at least one of its sides connects to a matching terrain type already in play. The game mechanics for obtaining the tiles is clever: the order of who picks first depends on which tile was previously chosen. Make sure to secure tiles with crowns- these royal treasures help to multiply the worth of your kingdom at the end of the game! The game ends when each player has completed a 5×5 grid, and then points are counted based on number of connecting tiles and crowns.

In the super-fast sushi card game Sushi Go! you are eating at a sushi restaurant and trying to grab the best combination of sushi dishes as they whiz by. Score points for collecting the most sushi rolls or making a full set of sashimi. Dip your favourite nigiri in wasabi to triple its value! And once you’ve eaten it all, finish your meal with all the pudding you’ve got! But be careful which sushi you allow your friends to take; it might be just what they need to beat you!

Opposing sheep herds go head to fluffy head in this quick moving strategy game. The goal is to have your sheep occupy the most pastures.

On each turn, players split their stack of sheep and move a portion as far as it can go in a straight line to a new pasture. Watch out for sneaky sheep and plan your moves carefully to fence out your rivals. Remember, the grass is always greener for the smartest sheep!
